We all love to travel, it's a way to get away from our everyday cares and responsibilities. It's an added bonus if we can take that holiday knowing that if we have an accident or get sick our injured, our basic needs will be taken care of by purchasing travel insurance.

It's easy to forget that our health or safety can be compromised even while we're away from home and far from the medical care and coverage we take for granted.  If we were to become ill or injured on vacation or business travel it's unlikely most of us have the money on hand to pay for medical bills.  We've heard horror stories of the difficulties encountered by travelers and most of us wonder what we'd do in similar situations.

There is a very good way to plan ahead for possible emergencies while we're traveling; travel insurance.  It's important to get the coverage we need at the best possible price and some research will reveal what conditions are covered and what are excluded.  Each policy will be a little different, so it's importance to read the terms and limitations of the policies.

The critical feature most of us should look for is emergency medical insurance coverage.  When an accident or emergency occurs in a foreign country, complications and misunderstandings can lead to serious problems.  Language, high cost, and possibly sub-standard medical conditions can make your vacation a nightmare rather than a dream.  It's comforting to be able to travel with the assurance that your medical care will be adequate for your needs.

You can purchase insurance that will provide global coverage in the listed countries during a period of five days to three years.  Most emergency medical tests and treatments, hospital stays, tests and x-rays, medications, dental care and ambulance services are usually covered.

When traveling internationally, it is a good idea to carry your medical records.  If you have a serious pre-existing condition, it's wise to have a plan whereby you can return home quickly and safely.  When traveling in Canada as a non-national, you can purchase insurance with a Canadian company that will offer you the same benefits as a citizen of that country.
